The Test of English as a Foreign Language Exam (commonly known as TOEFL) measures your ability to understand and utilize English at a college level. Over 6,000 colleges, government organizations, and businesses accept TOEFL examination scores worldwide. The TOEFL Test serves a similar function to other standardized tests (such as SAT and ACT Exams) in that they are utilized by colleges and universities as a factor in admissions. Different universities place varying degrees of weight on standardized tests, such as the TOEFL, and utilize them along with other factors such as GPA, class rank, community service, recommendations and extracurricular activities.

There are two formats for the TOEFL test: the TOEFL Paper-based Test (PBT) and the TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT). The TOEFL exam format is going to be based upon your TOEFL test location. Upwards of 4,300 TOEFL test facilities currently exist worldwide.

There are four areas that the TOEFL iBT concentrates on. These areas (reading, listening, speaking and writing) will test your English aptitude. The TOEFL examination focuses on words used in an educational, higher-learning setting. You are given four hours to complete the TOEFL iBT test.

Scores range from 0 to 120 for the TOEFL iBT. Each of the four sections (reading, listening, speaking and writing) are graded on a scale from 0 to 30. These sub scores are then added together for the full score. The questions on the reading and listening portions are graded automatically by computer. All of the 6 tasks within the speaking section has an opening score of 0 to 4 which is then changed to the 0 to 30 scale. Skilled exam scorers will evaluate your responses based on how well you expand your theme and convey your response in English. Similarly, both writing section tasks each have an initial score of 0 to 5 which is then modified to the 0 to 30 scale. The certified examination scorers rate your answers based on orderliness, grammar, vocabulary and general quality.

The Paper-based (PBT) examination TOEFL scores range from 310 to 677. Test scores will range from 31 to 68 for both the listening comprehension and the structure/written expression parts. The reading comprehension portion is scored on a range of 31 to 67. The raw test scores for each portion are then converted to the TOEFL test scale range of 310 to 677.
